There is so much dissent in government today and disagreement about the fundamental role government should play we aren't even listening to possible solutions. We seem unable to still
agree that 2 + 2 = 4 and herein lies the problem. The Constitution governs us not Parties.
Here in the “Red State” of Wyoming we are supposed to espouse to the Republican Party Platform and belief that the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical
functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations, and that the best government is that which governs the least. Allowing the expansion of Medicaid in Wyoming violates that fundamental belief.
As Republicans we profess to believe in a government that practices fiscal responsibility and that individuals should be allowed to keep more of the money we earn. I didn't think we believed in
the redistribution of wealth. By expanding Medicaid the money will have to come from somewhere and that inevitably will be from higher taxes.
The Governor's Affordable Care Act Medicaid Expansion Plan would further crowd out private insurance thus making it even more unaffordable. If you have anything to do with health care or
are awake at all, it is widely known the existing inefficiencies that need to be addressed without throwing more money after bad.
Why is it that here in Wyoming we are considering the prospect of sending more money to Washington and expecting that this time it would give us “a good return on our money”? I think everyone can agree there is plenty of room for reform but giving us one flawed option to help the uninsured is not the answer. Wyoming has rejected Obamacare's expansion a whopping six times in 2014 alone. Then again in 2015!
My question is with the challenging budget issues already plaguing our state budget why aren't we exploring new and different options? Why aren't we considering the option of exploring an added tax on alcohol sales or another sin tax possibility as an alternative? As we raise our glasses we can feel charitable at the same time! We also have the new Wyoming lottery as a possible revenue stream. I am not an advocate for taxes but a sin tax may possibly be a better option than the Medicaid Expansion currently being debated.
We need to think outside the perimeters of our current focus and consider other options.Perhaps WyomingCare in some form could be considered ? But, we also need to keep in mind that once the government implements a tax and a program it has very little chance of going away. Let's unite on ideas to look at other possible alternatives and quit going down the failed paths of recent history.
I believe Wyoming must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times. We forged a new path last year with the passage of the Food Freedom Act and I contend we can do it again with health care.
